What in a Nappy? Delve Deeper

What is SAP?

Safety Assessment of Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP)

Panda nappies use premium German SAP — the gold standard for safety and absorbency. It locks liquid into gel, keeping heavy wetters dry. Beware: some "eco" brands cut SAP to look greener, but less SAP = less protection.

Why is Bamboo Preferred?

Bamboo nappies are a hypoallergenic choice for sensitive skin—soft, breathable, and free from harsh chemicals to help reduce irritation. Our bamboo nappies have  front/back sheets and a bamboo‑pulp core, and not polyethylene/polypropylene outer sheets. Many “plant-based” nappies still rely on plantation wood pulp cores, which can be less sustainable and may contain added chemicals.

What Is a back or front (top) sheet? and why does it matter

Most nappies have three layers: a soft topsheet, a leak-proof backsheet, and an absorbent core in between.

  • Topsheet (inner layer): Sits against baby’s skin and lets liquid pass through fast. Most brands use polypropylene/polyethylene non-woven sheets, which are soft, however, are still plastic-based.
  • Backsheet (outer layer): Stops leaks onto clothes. Typically polyethylene film (waterproof plastic).

Panda’s Eco-Boom nappies use bamboo for both the top and back sheet—naturally hypoallergenic and ultra-gentle on sensitive skin.  Having a bamboo top and back sheet enhances breathability, which allows fabric to dissipates moisture

Tip: Cheaper nappies often feel rougher and harsher against the skin. Also, try to avoid nappies with printed backsheets- they often contain nasties

Why choose A fragrance-free nappy or wipe?

Fragrances are often added to nappies to mask odours, but they can also trigger allergic reactions. Because brands aren’t required to disclose the specific ingredients in their fragrance blends, you may not know what your baby is being exposed to.

Key takeaway: choose fragrance-free nappies and wipes.

Frequent Nappy Changes, Why?

  • Change nappies often—especially after bowel movements. Extended contact with urine and faeces is one of the biggest triggers for nappy rash.
  • Clean gently. Use warm water and a soft cloth, or fragrance-free wipes. Skip harsh soaps and alcohol-based wipes—they can inflame sensitive skin.
  • Dry thoroughly. Pat (don’t rub) until fully dry before putting on a fresh nappy. Damp skin encourages bacteria and fungal growth.

Smart tip: Imagine you're out for the day with your baby. Even if the nappy doesn't seem completely full, it's still a good idea to change it regularly, especially if your baby has had a bowel movement. Pack extra nappies, wipes, and a changing mat in your nappy bag to ensure you're prepared for any situation.
